Shepton Mallet Open Gardens

As well as organizing our local Open Gardens, I also take part in the event. This year we have 18 gardens participating plus a couple of ‘pothole gardens’ and our amazing community telephone box.

Restored by the community, planted by the community, cared for by Mary!

Shepton Mallet Open Gardens has been a great success over the past three years and it takes place again this summer, on Sunday 15th June. The event raises funds for Shepton Snowdrops to buy bulbs for planting around the town in the autumn.

“What I love about Open Gardens is that people can enthuse and share their love of plants and gardens. Our event, when discovered on foot, invites you to discover ancient paths, alleyways, ‘secret’ doors in walls as well as the medieval part of town”.

Tickets are on sale here £6

Shepton Snowdrops Project:

  • a community led project, investing in our town
  • claiming the snowdrop as our ‘town flower’
  • celebrating the historic legacy of James Allen, a famous C19th snowdrop hybridizer and collector still known today as the ‘Snowdrop King’. He was born and lived his entire life here in the town.
  • engage with people locally, regionally and nationally, bringing visitors to our Snowdrop Festival in February to benefit the local economy at a normally quiet time of the year.

For the past ten years volunteers have raised funds and planted over 550,000 bulbs in the town.
