Devon Charm

I started working with my clients in 2013 and together we developed a beautiful, wildlife friendly garden from a huge flat circular lawn. By 2017 the garden was gently terraced (50cm retaining walls) into three distinct areas: a walled kitchen garden, two pool gardens and a rill garden. All the hedges were planted including pleached cut leaf crab apple, Malus transitoria.

Last week I had the great pleasure of re visiting the garden with a view to developing one last area, the lawn above the ha-ha.

Hornbeam and yew hedges divide the garden, there are glimpses through to other areas
Clipped hornbeam columns provide habitat for birds and insects. Hydrangea aspera is used here, its loose habit providing contrast – I love it’s coarse leaves and mauve lace cap flowers.
The ‘canal’ is flanked by nectar rich herbaceous borders with clipped yew topiary
